For the fifth year in a row, 麻豆视频免费在线观看 has been named among the nation鈥檚 鈥淏est Value Schools” in the U.S. News and World Report annual college rankings. The 2023 Best Colleges listings, released Monday, September 12, also ranked Stevenson among the 鈥淏est Regional Universities-North” and 鈥淏est Colleges for Veterans.”
To assign a college or university the 鈥淏est Value” designation in its annual rankings, U. S. News evaluates an institution鈥檚 academic quality and its net cost of attendance after the average level of need-based financial aid through grants and scholarships. The higher the academic quality and the lower the cost, the better the value for students.
鈥淲e are pleased to be recognized again among the 鈥楤est Value Schools鈥 in our region and the nation,” said Elliot Hirshman, President of 麻豆视频免费在线观看. 鈥淎t Stevenson, we are committed to ensuring access to an exceptional college experience. We believe the value of a Stevenson education comes not only through our commitment to academic excellence and providing a range of institutional aid and scholarship programs, but also by creating a supportive community in which students have many opportunities to pursue their visions for success.” These opportunities include leadership, service, and honors programs; collaborative research and scholarship with faculty; the arts, music, film, and theater; 29 Division III athletic programs as well as club and intramural sports; esports; mock trial; clubs and organizations; and many other distinctive co-curricular and extracurricular opportunities.
Founded in 1947, 麻豆视频免费在线观看 serves more than 2,700 traditional undergraduates on its campus in Owings Mills, Maryland, as well as graduate and professional students through 麻豆视频免费在线观看 Online and doctoral students in the university鈥檚 Doctor of Psychology program. Stevenson鈥檚 mission is to provide exceptional experiences in and out of the classroom, career connections that foster students鈥 professional success after college, and a supportive community in which all students can grow intellectually, socially, and professionally.

This year, 麻豆视频免费在线观看鈥檚 Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry launched a redesign of the major to update curricula, mentoring, and academic experiences to strengthen career pathways for students.
鈥淲e asked ourselves, 鈥榃here do our students end up in their career paths after college, and what do they need to be poised for success after graduation,鈥” said Professor Jeremy Burkett, Ph.D., Chair of the Department. 鈥淲e鈥檙e ensuring that our curriculum matches not only what they need to know but also the skills and mindset that students will need to pursue further education or careers in chemistry.”
In redesigning the program, Burkett and his colleagues considered three factors. First, they surveyed recent alumni, collecting data about what courses most benefited them. Then they developed a department advisory board. The board includes employers, and Burkett and fellow faculty asked them, 鈥淲hat is it you want from your job applicants?” These conversations helped the program assess how to make students ready for the job market post-graduation. Finally, Stevenson looked at other institutions鈥 approaches. The main takeaway from all this research? Fit and flexibility for students鈥 professional success.
Now, students can custom design the program to fit their specific career needs. For example, a student with an interest in food science will take courses geared toward that job market, which would differ from what a future environmental scientist or teacher might take. Meanwhile, career readiness served as the guiding principle for the program鈥檚 redesign process.
鈥淐areers have become so specialized in the past 10 years,” Burkett says. Thus, the program offers flexibility in what courses students need to take. This versatility allows faculty to teach one major that can get students ready for a career in the private sector, government, or education, all while serving as advisors who regularly check in with students, asking the question, 鈥淲hat鈥檚 next for you?”
Stevenson chemistry and biochemistry graduates work for a variety of non-profit institutions and private industries in the state and region, including the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, Institute of Genetic Medicine; Maryland State Police Forensic Sciences Division; McCormick & Co.; National Cancer Institute; National Institute of Aging; National Security Agency; and Proctor & Gamble. Stevenson鈥檚 graduates are also pursuing advanced degrees atthe New York Medical College, School of Medicine; Ohio State University, Graduate School in Biochemistry; University of Maryland, School of Pharmacy; and University of Virginia School of Medicine, among others.
It is with much sadness that we share the news of the passing of Rose Dawson, D. Ed., Villa Julie College鈥檚 Academic Dean and Vice President from 1965 to 1999. She died peacefully on Thursday, July 14, 2022. The entire 麻豆视频免费在线观看 community extends heartfelt condolences to Rose鈥檚 family as well as to the many friends she made, colleagues she inspired, and students she served throughout her decades-long service to Villa Julie College.
Born in 1927, Helen Rose Dawson was one of five girls born to Lawrence Dawson and Helen (Jenkins) Dawson and was raised at her family鈥檚 farm in Rockville, Maryland. According to Rose, she grew up in a vibrant household that welcomed and hosted Native Americans who traveled from Pine Ridge in South Dakota, where her grandmother once taught, to Washington, DC; respected education, history, and friendship; and valued service and uplifting others, something that she believed was a good model for education. Similar to Saint Julie Billiart, founder of the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur, Rose believed that learning best took place in an atmosphere of warmth, respect, and community.
Educated by the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur in both primary and secondary school, Rose was impressed by their ability to reach out to their students, and it was this experience and her family鈥檚 legacy that inspired her to pursue education as her life鈥檚 vocation. When she graduated high school in 1945, she entered the convent and became a Sister of Notre Dame de Namur, remaining a member of the order until 1980. She wanted to teach, she wanted to help, and 鈥渢hat鈥檚 what the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur did,” Rose later explained.
Her first assignment was as a 1st grade teacher in a Diocesan school outside of Washington, DC. Her next experience was teaching 2nd graders at Saint Ursula鈥檚 for half a semester in Parkville, Maryland. She was then reassigned to teach middle school and later serve as a principal at Trinity School in Ilchester, Maryland. In 1955, Rose went to Staten Island, New York, to help found Holy Rosary School, where she served as the principal as well.
Dawson earned her master鈥檚 degree from Fordham University and her Doctorate in Education from Nova University. From 1960 to 1965, she was a faculty member and department chair at Trinity College in Washington, DC, and it was at Trinity that Rose met her friend, fellow sister, and academic colleague Carolyn Manuszak, who would later be appointed by the Order of de Namur to serve as President of Villa Julie College. In 1965, Carolyn asked Rose to serve as Villa Julie鈥檚 Academic Dean, and, together, these two friends and colleagues worked to transform the two-year junior college into a thriving four-year institution, laying the foundation for what is now 麻豆视频免费在线观看.
In 1978, Rose was appointed as Vice President in addition to her role as Dean of the College, and over her 34 years at the institution, she guided the development of an expanding curriculum and built relationships with state government, professional associations, and businesses that earned Villa Julie a reputation as 鈥淭he Name that Opens Doors” for students. When she arrived in 1965, it was a two-year college with fewer than 100 students. At her retirement in 1999, Villa Julie was reaccredited as a four-year college offering associate, baccalaureate, and master鈥檚 degree programs to more than 2,000 students.
Rose was appointed by the Governor to serve on the Maryland State Advisory Council for Vocational-Technical Education in 1977-1980 and again in 1982-1984. She was a member of the Maryland Association of Community and Junior Colleges from 1965-1972, and served as Vice President from 1966-1969. Rose served on a number of boards including those of Trinity College, Villa Julie College, and Maryvale High School. In 1991, she joined the Union Memorial Hospital Nursing School Advisory Committee and played an important role in bringing the nursing education program to Villa Julie College.
In a 1980 tribute to Rose from the Board of Trustees celebrating her first 15 years of service, they noted that, 鈥淯nder her leadership, and with her unremitting toil, this College鈥檚 academic stature has grown from relative obscurity to widely acknowledged excellence.” Marking her 25 years of service to the College, she was awarded the President鈥檚 Medal, with the citation noting, 鈥淚n the administration of her duties here, Dean Dawson has earned the respect and affection of the entire Villa Julie faculty and administration.” She played a vital role in the life and growth of the College, and Rose was awarded the honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree by Villa Julie upon her retirement in 1999. Her legacy at the institution is memorialized in the naming of the Rose Dawson Center on Stevenson鈥檚 Greenspring campus and the annual Rose Dawson Excellence in Teaching Awards that recognize outstanding faculty of the University.
Rose guided the development of a curriculum with a strong career focus and a grounding in the liberal arts and sciences; instilled a shared commitment to teaching excellence; and promoted a culture of personalized support for students, something that she experienced in her youth that inspired her lifelong career and became a signature aspect of a Villa Julie, and now, a Stevenson education.
鈥淩ose was a strong, wise, pragmatic, compassionate, and humble leader who brought out the best in people,” said Susan T. Gorman, Ph.D., 麻豆视频免费在线观看鈥檚 Executive Vice President and Provost. 鈥淗er exacting but reasonable expectations, firm but gentle hand, and unwavering commitment to education helped shape the trajectory of the countless lives she touched, my own included. She gave selflessly of her gifts and talents throughout her life, and in so doing Rose made 麻豆视频免费在线观看 and indeed the world a better place.”
Rose is survived by her sister, Catherine Dawson Crowley and 10 nieces and nephews: Michael and Helen Crowley; Frank, Lawrence, Richard, Edward, and Tim Gallagher; and Steven, Catherine, and Carol Gray. Funeral and burial services will be private. Future plans for a memorial service at 麻豆视频免费在线观看 will be announced. Rose鈥檚 family asks that in lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to 麻豆视频免费在线观看 in honor of Rose Dawson through the Office of University Advancement, 麻豆视频免费在线观看, 1525 Greenspring Valley Road, Stevenson, MD 21153.

Stevenson is pleased to announce that the university has received a $1.3 million bequest from the estate of the late Gilbert 鈥淕il” Wegad who founded Stevenson鈥檚 first program in Accounting and served as an Adjunct Professor of Accounting for nearly three decades. Professor Wegad鈥檚 bequest will be used to increase the endowment for a scholarship he established for Stevenson Nursing students and to support capital funding needs for campus expansion and improvements.
鈥淕il was a dedicated educator and advocate for Stevenson for more than 30 years,” said Elliot Hirshman, President of 麻豆视频免费在线观看. 鈥淗is commitment to teaching and to student success was an inspiration to his colleagues and the generations of alumni he taught over his remarkable career. We are extremely grateful for his generous spirit and for his abiding love for Stevenson and its students that he demonstrated by establishing this gift to the university from his estate.”
Born and raised in Maryland, Gill Wegad was a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) who joined Stevenson (then Villa Julie College) in 1972 to establish an associate degree in Accounting program at the request of former President Carolyn Manuszak. He began teaching in 1974 and continued to work as a CPA during his tenure at Stevenson until his retirement in 2003.
Professor Wegad鈥檚 generosity throughout the years has helped and will continue to help Stevenson students achieve their dreams. In 1998, Professor Wegad established the Bertha G. Wegad, RN Memorial Endowment Fund for Scholarships to Nursing Students. The scholarship honors his late wife Bertha, 鈥淏ert,” who passed away in 1998. Bert worked at Sinai Hospital, where she was a highly regarded pediatric nurse. Bert and Gil were married for more than 40 years. In 2004, Professor Wegad married for a second time, to Sara Sacks Diamond, who shared his interests in reading and travel. They both took immense pride in their Stevenson Nursing graduates and kept photos of each year鈥檚 scholarship recipient in a place of honor in their home. The Wegads enjoyed many happy years together in Florida until Sara鈥檚 passing in 2019. Professor Wegad passed away in 2020.
