Rohini Ralby Foursquares Paintings Exhibition on Display at Stevenson

Â鶹ÊÓƵÃâ·ÑÔÚÏß¹Û¿´ will host the work of Owings Mills-based painter Rohini Ralby from January 22 through May 18 in the Art Gallery on the University’s Greenspring Campus, 1525 Greenspring Valley Road, Stevenson, MD 21153.

A public reception will take place Thursday, February 15, from 5:30-7:00p.m. On Thursday April 12, from 5:45-6:15pm, the artist will be giving a talk. Both events are free and the community is encouraged to attend.

Color. Rhythm. Space. Value. Stroke. Each element contributes its own composition to the whole, and all must integrate to form a successful painting. Ralby brings to her work a masterful understanding of this integration, drawn from a range of disciplines.

In addition to studying Chinese calligraphy, Ralby trained in Tai Chi Chuan with T. R. Chung, disciple of Kuo Lien Ying. During her undergraduate years at Washington University in St. Louis, she worked with Leslie Laskey, Annelise Mertz, and Nelson Wu. After earning her M.A. in dance at Mills College, she established herself as a well-known Tai Chi Chuan teacher in Cambridge, MA, before becoming a close personal disciple of Swami Muktananda Paramahamsa, who instructed her one-on-one in internal contemplative practice. In 2012, Bancroft Press published Ralby’s book Walking Home with Baba: The Heart of Spiritual Practice.

Ralby works at the confluence of multiple artistic and spiritual traditions. Like all her teachers, she focuses on where within the artist an artwork emerges; to allow art to manifest from the deepest levels, one has to go beyond technique.

In 2011, Ralby returned to her brush and blades and began working with oils on paper, canvas, and panel. The resulting compositions vibrate at the frequencies that underlie conventional signification. Her pictorial languages have evolved with her contemplative and artistic practice. Ralby’s paintings, which consist of four panels each, depict the vibrations of each component in a semantic field of four qualities, which Ralby has termed a fourchotomy; for this reason, the paintings are called Foursquares.

Stevenson Launches New Homepage and Navigation

On December 17, Stevenson will launch a new homepage and site-wide navigation that responds to evolving web trends, conveys our brand, and supports undergraduate recruitment and enrollment. The primary goal of the “refresh” is to implement a high-impact user experience and to enhance navigation for both PC and mobile use, which is nearly a third of all web traffic. Updates include:

  • New, easier-to-use site-wide navigation (header and footer)
  • Content that conveys our value propositions, from student success stories and to the SU experience
  • Design elements to reinforce the University’s brand and visual identity
  • Styling that responds to larger monitors and higher screen resolutions
  • Navigation and menu now accessible in the top right corner of the homepage
  • Coding and styles to make the site compliant with WCAG level AA accessibility guidelines

Although the navigation will look and function differently, all commonly-used tools and resources such as the SU Now Portal, Directory, SU Alert, and Campus Maps remain easily accessible on the right-hand side of the new dropdown menu, or in the new footer—all of which carry through on every page of the site.

Questions about the new homepage and related components can be directed to Brandon Seidl, Web Director, at bseidl@stevenson.edu or ext. 4415.

Naval Academy Athletics Internship Bolsters Business Communication Major for Career Beyond Stevenson

Student at Naval internship

Bryan Corvera-Flores, of Alexandria, Va., has truly had an exceptional experience at Â鶹ÊÓƵÃâ·ÑÔÚÏß¹Û¿´. After earning a Bachelor of Science in Business Communication at Stevenson in December 2017, Bryan plans to attend Georgetown University to earn a master’s degree in sports industry management. Bryan is immersed in the Stevenson Community in several ways, including playing on the Mustang football team, and serving as writer, sports editor, and editor-in-chief for The Villager (SU’s online news publication). Bryan was also named to the Dean’s List in fall 2016 and spring 2017. His involvement on campus along with his academic prowess helped set the stage for securing career prospects when he landed a highly competitive internship with the United States Naval Academy for the fall 2017 semester.

“My internship at the United States Naval Academy is with the Naval Academy Athletic Association (NAAA), specifically with Athletic Development and the Fund for Athletic Excellence. The internship has been amazing. I have the opportunity to work with the Midshipmen who will serve our country upon graduating while interning with a Division I program with a rich history.

The internship is a very detailed in regards to who I am coming in contact with. Many times I could be helping with a donor who is a huge supporter of the Academy or other times I could be working with media. An example of a project that I worked on early on at my internship were sponsorship opportunities. Our department wanted to give potential donors an opportunity to sponsor different areas in the Academy’s 38,000 seat stadium and I created a guide detailing them. I would say that my responsibilities during football games are what I enjoy the most. We set up for events, and our job is to keep donors happy during the game.

I feel very prepared for graduation. The education that I have received here has been top of the line. The responsibilities that I take on at my internship with the United States Navy and previously at Under Armour help me apply what I learned both in and out of the classroom.”
