Stevenson Mock Trial Ends Successful Spring 2025 Season

The 麻豆视频免费在线观看 Mock Trial program ended its Spring 2025 Season after competing at the American Mock Trial Association Regional Tournament hosted by the College of William & Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia, on February 21-23.

This season, 麻豆视频免费在线观看 Mock Trial team members took home a number of awards. Notably, many awards went to first-year Mock Trial team members. Awards in mock trial are determined by a rank system鈥攖he higher the rank, the greater the award. Ranks are included in parentheses in the list below.

  • Junior Legal Studies major Melanie Lopez received three Outstanding Witness awards (15 rank, 17 rank, and 18 rank) and two Outstanding Attorney awards (16 rank and 17 rank)
  • First-year Legal Studies major Lilly Eichelberger won an Outstanding Witness award (16 rank) and an All-Regional Witness award (17 rank)
  • First-year Legal Studies major Jaden Marion received two Outstanding Witness awards (16 rank and 17 rank)
  • First-year Legal Studies major Kylie Owens received an Outstanding Attorney award (16 rank)
  • Sophomore Legal Studies major Kandi Mkpasi won an All-Regional Attorney award (18 rank)

鈥淚t鈥檚 important to emphasize how young this team is,鈥 said Ahad Khan, Adjunct Instructor of Law and Stevenson Mock Trial coach. 鈥淥f the 18 team members we had this past season, 11 were first-year students. The growth of our team this year has been remarkable!鈥

Although the season has ended, the Mock Trial program is not taking a break. This summer, the program will host its fourth Camp Mock Trial. The free program helps students hone their trial skills over summer break. Participating students work on a single case, leading up to a final trial at the end of the summer. Camp Mock Trial will be held virtually and in-person on Sundays from May 25 to August 3.

鈥淐amp Mock Trial is an exciting opportunity for students to learn about trial advocacy in a controlled environment, while building new connections with peers and faculty鈥 said Norman Greenwell, Assistant Professor of Law and Stevenson Mock Trial coach.

厂迟别惫别苍蝉辞苍鈥檚 English Department has announced Silvia Park as its 2025 Visiting Writer.

Silvia Park grew up in Seoul and split their time between Korea and America. Park currently teaches fiction at the University of Kansas. They received a B.A. from Columbia, an M.F.A. from NYU, and attended the Clarion Science and Fantasy Writers鈥 Workshop and the Tin House Summer Workshop.

Their short fiction has been published in Black Warrior Review, Joyland, Reactor, and reprinted in The Best American Science Fiction And Fantasy 2019. Their first novel, , was published by Simon & Schuster in 2025. The speculative fiction novel is set in a near-future unified Korea and follows three estranged siblings鈥攖wo human, one robot鈥攁s they collide against the backdrop of a murder investigation to settle old scores and make sense of their shattered childhood.

On Tuesday, April 1, Park will present a public reading followed by discussion and refreshments in the Rockland Ballroom.

Stevenson’s 2025 Dell Lecture Recognizes Outstanding Students

麻豆视频免费在线观看 held its 17th Dell Lecture on Thursday, March 27 in the Philip A. Zaffere Library. The annual event recognizes two outstanding students鈥攐ne from the Beverly K. Fine School of the Sciences and one from the Howard S. Brown School of Business and Leadership鈥攚ith the Geraldine and Sam Dell Scholarship.

Former ExxonMobil executive Sam Dell served as a Stevenson Trustee from 2007-2024 and was recently reelected to the board for a new term beginning June 1. He believes the future success of American enterprise in the global marketplace depends on fostering uncompromising integrity, the ability to work within a team, a deep understanding of effective business practices, and a strong sense of discipline and work ethic. He and his late wife Geraldine endowed this scholarship to recognize Stevenson students who demonstrate these personal qualities and skills that will enable them to contribute to and successfully compete in the global workforce.

Keynote speaker Dr. Darryl Carter, co-founder and chief scientific officer of Otter Immuno-Oncology, and the 2025 Geraldine and Sam Dell Scholarship recipients: Business Administration major Anthony Breen and Biomedical Engineering major Alex Reimert.

This year, the scholarship was awarded to junior Business Administration major Anthony Breen and junior Biomedical Engineering major Alex Reimert.

Anthony Breen is passionate about finance. In addition to his Business Administration studies, Anthony is double-minoring in Entrepreneurship and Small Business Development and Accounting, and is currently taking classes for his Master鈥檚 in Forensic Accounting, and has interned at Wells Fargo Financial Advisors. After graduation, Anthony intends to pursue a career as a fiduciary financial planner where he can focus on putting his customers鈥 financial interest first. As President of 厂迟别惫别苍蝉辞苍鈥檚 Financial Management Association club, Anthony helped grow the club to over 100 members and developed financial literacy lessons which were distributed on campus and to Baltimore City youth. He plays on 厂迟别惫别苍蝉辞苍鈥檚 Men’s ACHA Division II Club Ice Hockey team, and also serves as the team鈥檚 CFO. He has interned at Wells Fargo Financial Advisors and is part of a student start-up app, RunRec, developed by a fellow Stevenson student.

After graduation, Alex Reimert plans to earn a graduate degree in Biomedical Engineering and pursue a career in medical robotics and rehabilitation technology. During his time at Stevenson, Alex has engaged in Biomedical Engineering research and presented at meetings of American Society for Biomechanics. Alex is a member of the Men鈥檚 Track and Field team, and serves as a Resident Assistant. He is also heavily involved in campus life, participating in the Student Athlete Advisory Committee, tutoring math at the Academic Link, helping fellow students as a Writing Consultant at the Writing Center, and is a member of Chi Alpha Sigma鈥攖he honor society for student athletes.

This year鈥檚 keynote address was presented by Dr. Darryl Carter. Dr. Carter is the co-founder and chief scientific officer of Otter Immuno-Oncology, and also serves as a venture advisor at The University of Maryland, Baltimore. Dr. Carter is the sole inventor of 14 issued patents and previously served as a faculty member of the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and an attending physician in diagnostic immunology at the Johns Hopkins Hospital.

厂迟别惫别苍蝉辞苍鈥檚 Art and Graphic Design Department has announced artist and design educator Jen White-Johnson as its 2025 Artist in Residence.

Jen White-Johnson is a disabled and neurodivergent artist and designer educator who centers Black disabled joy and futures in her work, informed by disability justice and Black feminist disability framework. White-Johnson has presented her disability justice activist work and collaborated with a number of brands and art spaces across print and digital such as Target, Coachella, and Adobe Design. Her work is permanently archived at The Metropolitan Museum of Art and the National African American Museum of History and Culture in Washington, DC. White-Johnson holds a B.A. in Visual Art from the University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC) and an MFA in Graphic Design from the Maryland Institute College of Art, where she also teaches. She lives in Baltimore with her husband and son.

On Thursday, March 27, White-Johnson will give a public lecture, 鈥淎mplifying Accessibility & Abolishing Ableism: Designing to Embolden Black Disability Visual Culture,鈥 in the School of Design, Arts, and Communication Sound Stage. Her presentation will examine the profound impact of neurodiversity on artistic expression and highlight the need for inclusive design practices.

Stevenson Biochemistry Major Attends Selective University of Florida Cancer Center Career Explorations Program

麻豆视频免费在线观看 Biochemistry major Savannah Lacey was selected from a wide pool of applicants to participate in the , February 11-13, 2025.

The annual competitive program selects up to 30 undergraduates from across the nation and provides them with an all-expenses paid visit to the National Cancer Institute (NCI) designated University of Florida (UF) Health Cancer Center.

While in Florida, Savannah attended symposia on innovative cancer research and learned about graduate school pathways for cancer research. Along with other attendees, Savannah was invited as a special guest to the UF Health Cancer Center Research Showcase. The showcase featured more than 150 faculty and trainee research posters, predoctoral awardee presentations, and a keynote speaker.

厂迟别惫别苍蝉辞苍鈥檚 Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry program allows students to explore the interdependent nature of the areas of chemical and biological sciences. Students work with state-of-the-art equipment and gain the lab experience and analytical skills they need to prepare for an interdisciplinary science career or continue their education at the graduate or professional school-level.

Students in the program have benefited from internships at leading science and health organizations, including the Maryland State Police Forensic Sciences Division, the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, and Greater Baltimore Medical Center. Graduates of the program have gone on to careers in the health professions, forensic science, genetic and medical research, and pharmaceutical research at employers including MedStar Health, the National Institutes of Health, and the National Cancer Institute.

The Healthcare Management program is offered through 厂迟别惫别苍蝉辞苍鈥檚 Brown School of Business and Leadership. It is designed to give graduates the knowledge, skills, abilities, and technological competencies essential to be successful in healthcare administration, from analyzing healthcare data to making decisions that impact the delivery of healthcare services and communicating with different stakeholders. In addition to theoretical preparation, all students in the program gain practical experience by completing internships at leading healthcare organizations, such as the Johns Hopkins Hospital, Mercy Medical Center, MedChi, the Maryland State Medical Society, and LifeBridge Health.

Stevenson Students Visit Annapolis for Independent Higher Education Day

On February 18, 麻豆视频免费在线观看 students and President Hirshman visited Annapolis for the annual trip to celebrate Independent Higher Education Day.

During the trip, the students met with state leaders, including Governor Wes Moore, Baltimore County Senator Shelly Hettleman, and Baltimore County Delegate Aletheia McCaskill. The students had the opportunity to share their personal stories of success and growth, as well as thank state officials for their support of Maryland鈥檚 independent colleges and universities.

Independent Higher Education Day is an annual event that recognizes the partnership between State of Maryland and its independent colleges and universities. The event celebrates the contributions of these institutions to workforce development, scientific discoveries, global competitiveness, civic participation, and service to the community.

During this special event, Stevenson students and leaders join with their counterparts from throughout the state to engage in a variety of exciting activities, including meetings with legislators, presentations, and a luncheon.

Stevenson Welcomes Retired Admiral James Stavridis to Speak on Campus

麻豆视频免费在线观看 welcomes Retired Admiral James Stavridis to speak at Rockland Banquet Hall on Thursday, February 20 at 1:30 p.m. Students, faculty, and community members are invited to attend the on-campus discussion.

The 16th NATO Supreme Allied Commander, Stavridis attended the US Naval Academy at Annapolis and spent 37 years in the Navy, ultimately rising to the rank of four-star admiral. He oversaw NATO operations in Afghanistan, Libya, Syria, the Balkans, and counter piracy off the coast of Africa. As the head of US Southern Command in Miami, Stavridis oversaw military operations through Latin America.

Highly decorated, his awards include the Battenberg Cup for commanding the top ship in the Atlantic Fleet and the Navy League John Paul Jones Award for Inspirational leadership. Following his military career, Stavridis served as Dean of his alma mater, The Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University, where he earned his PhD.

Stavridis is a Bloomberg Opinion columnist and Chief International Security Analyst for NBC News. He is Partner and Vice Chair, Global Affairs of The Carlyle Group and Chair of the Board of Trustees, Rockefeller Foundation. He is also a best-selling author, having published twelve books on leadership, character, risk, the oceans, maritime affairs, and Latin America, as well as hundreds of articles in leading journals. His most recent books include: To Risk It All: Nine Conflicts and The Crucible of Decision; The New York Times Best Seller, 2034: A Novel of the Next World War; and, 2054: A Novel.

Stevenson Legal Studies Major Holds Marine Corps Commissioning in Pugh Courtroom

On Friday, January 31, Legal Studies major Zachary Essamuah was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps in 厂迟别惫别苍蝉辞苍鈥檚 Francis X. Pugh Courtroom. His commissioning is the product of a six-year journey from enlisted Marine to officer. The ceremony was attended by Zachary鈥檚 family and friends, as well as Stevenson faculty and staff.

Zachary, a senior who will be graduating in May, specifically requested to be commissioned in the Pugh Courtroom.

鈥淚 chose to hold my commissioning in the Francis X. Pugh Courtroom because it was where my journey as a Mustang began,鈥 Zachary said. 鈥淣ow it has come full circle for it to end where it all started.鈥

While at Stevenson, Zachary has been an active member of the Legal Studies program鈥檚 award-winning Mock Trial, an experience that he says has prepared him for his future career.

鈥淢y goal is to become a Judge Advocate in the Marine Corps and to serve in the military for as long as possible,鈥 Zachary said. 鈥淢y time in the Legal Studies program at Stevenson helped prepare me for my career. It has allowed me to step into the role of an attorney through Mock Trial and has allowed me to study the law before I get into law school.鈥
