Stitching Maryland Together: Stevenson Students Working to Unite the State鈥檚 Fashion Community

麻豆视频免费在线观看 students and faculty are working with PNC Bank, the Jewish Museum of Maryland, and the Maryland Historical Society to bring together the state鈥檚 fashion community. Two major events are planned for this spring. On Jan. 28, the Jewish Museum of Maryland will host a pre-launch fashion event during which Maryland designers will be invited to get involved with the movement. On May 4, these designers can showcase their work in a fashion show titled 鈥淓xpedition 1″ to be held at Rams Head Live in Baltimore.

The prelaunch fashion event/exhibit will feature a documentary detailing the past, present, and future of design in Maryland; information on partners鈥 exhibits; vendors; and a fashion show highlighting the work of senior Stevenson Fashion Design students as well as designers from across the state. This event also will provide an opportunity for anyone involved in Maryland fashion to begin to network and start the process of actually 鈥渟titching” the community together. To receive an invitation to this event, email events@stitchingmdtogether.org.

PNC Bank launched the initiative by giving Stevenson the idea for the project and a grant to help fund it by supporting the instruction of the course, research on industry, and the materials needed for the creation and promotion of the fashion community and related events. Starting in Fall 2018, students in the interdisciplinary course The Mill, taught in Stevenson鈥檚 School of Design, began to develop plans to build momentum in Maryland鈥檚 fashion community. In addition to the two major events this spring, students in the course also have designed a logo, mission and vision statements, a website, and a social media presence for this newfound community.

Exceptional Capstone Experience for Biology Major

Senior Akeweh Fondong is planning for medical school and a career as a surgeon. For his capstone experience, he worked with Dr. John Russell in the Johns Hopkins Department of Otolaryngology/Head & Neck Surgery – Endoscopic & Robotic Thyroid Parathyroid Surgery. Akeweh is already a skilled Certified Surgical Technologist, and so was able to participate in surgical procedures, as well as shadowing Dr. Russell on clinical rounds. During rounds, Akeweh learned about patient communication, informed consent, and conducting and reading ultrasounds.

In the operating room, he was able to assist Dr. Russel on head and neck surgeries. He was also given the opportunity to work with surgeons in a variety of other specialties including gynecology, plastics, gastrointestinal, urology, and trauma. 鈥淪ince most of the surgeons knew about my career path, I was more involved in the cases as compared to before starting my capstone. I was taught more about the procedures and learned from the discussions the surgeons had with residents, fellows and medical students.”
