The new 55,000-square-foot library will be named in honor of the late Philip A. Zaffere, an entrepreneur, inventor, and food production engineer from Maryland鈥檚 Eastern Shore. The facility will complement the Manning Academic Center and School of Design at Stevenson鈥檚 Owings Mill North campus location.

Philip A. Zaffere was born in Federalsburg, Md., in 1930, and took over operations of his family鈥檚 bakery business during his college years. An outside-of-the-box thinker, Zaffere engineered food production methods and technologies that eventually took his family鈥檚 small company to a national level. He developed successful formulas for the mass production of baking crumbs and transformed his family鈥檚 company into Shoreman Food Technologies. Under Zaffere鈥檚 leadership, Shoreman鈥攚hich was ultimately sold to the PET Food Corporation in 1988鈥攂ecame the main supplier for nationwide brands such as Stove Top Stuffing and Mrs. Paul鈥檚 frozen foods. While the needs of his family鈥檚 business interrupted his own college studies, Zaffere maintained a deep and lifelong curiosity for the sciences and engineering as well as a commitment to supporting education and his community. He passed away in January 2016.

Stevenson will break ground and begin site development on the new Philip A. Zaffere Library this spring. In addition to library facilities, the complex will include a black box theater; a faculty commons with offices; and a variety of gathering spaces for academic, social, and cultural functions. The building will enhance Stevenson鈥檚 student experience on the Owings Mills campus by expanding research, study, and social spaces as well as foster collaborations between academic departments.

Beginning with the Spring 2020 semester, the Office of Career Services is now the Stevenson Career Connection Center.

University Trustee Jennifer Ward Reynolds Endows Scholarship for Stevenson Students

Stevenson is pleased to announce that university Trustee Jennifer Ward Reynolds and her husband George K. Reynolds III have committed $100,000 to establish a scholarship fund for Stevenson students. The Reynolds Endowed Scholarship will assist students with a strong academic standing who demonstrate financial need.

鈥淲e deeply believe in the power of higher education to transform lives and communities,” the Reynolds said. 鈥淐reating this scholarship fund at Stevenson is not only an investment in the future of individual students, but in our greater community, as well. Stevenson graduates step into the community armed with the skills and knowledge that enable them to be immediately productive and engaged contributors to society, which benefits us all.”

Reynolds has served twice as Trustee of Stevenson with her most recent term on the university鈥檚 Board starting in 2018. Currently a partner and director of the Harford County-based commercial real estate firm Ward Properties, she has spent more than 30 years in asset management, most recently holding the position of Vice Chair and Chief Investment Officer of Legg Mason Trust. She has previously served as the chair of the board of trustees at Dickinson College, her undergraduate alma mater. Her service has also included chairing the board of the National Aquarium as well as appointments to the boards of the Walters Art Museum, Sheppard Pratt Hospital, and the Baltimore School for the Arts. The Maryland Daily Record has twice recognized her as one of Maryland鈥檚 Top 100 Women.

George Reynolds is an attorney with Miles & Stockbridge and a member of the firm’s estate planning and administration practice. A graduate of Wesleyan University and the Boston University School of Law, he has practiced law in Maryland for more than 40 years. His areas of focus have included education law, tax law, estate planning and administration, trusts, and elder care law. A regular speaker to professionals and groups on these legal topics, Reynolds is a past Maryland State Chair of the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel. He is currently a member of the Walters Art Museum board, and past member of the boards of the Howard County Conservancy, St. Joseph Hospital Foundation, and the National Arthritis Foundation of Maryland.

Featuring digital stock tickers and multiple market data displays, the Applied Finance Lab will be a sophisticated teaching and research tool to enhance our students鈥 career readiness by developing their command of financial technology platforms and investment decision-making processes.

鈥淲ith 35 years experience as a corporate controller, treasurer, CFO, and bank director, I enjoy relating the technical academic material students are learning in the classroom to how it is practiced in real workplace scenarios,” Starliper said. 鈥淭he Applied Finance lab will make this experience even richer for them.”

Starliper is the former Executive Vice President and CFO of Provident Bank. He was first introduced to Stevenson and the Brown School by former university Trustee and Board Chair Kevin Byrnes. After a long and distinguished career in banking and finance, Starliper decided to share his knowledge and expertise in finance with a new generation and became an Adjunct Professor of Accounting at Stevenson in 2009. This is his second gift to the Brown School. Previously, he established an annual scholarship for Stevenson Accounting and Business Administration students.

Nursing Student Receives Scholarship for International Study

Desiree Miller, a sophomore nursing student, has been chosen as the most recent recipient of the . In spring 2020 Desiree will participate in the SU in Spain (ISA) program to Valencia for the semester. While abroad she will take courses in health sciences at the Universidad Cat贸lica de Valencia toward her nursing requirements as well as humanities courses that fulfill general education requirements.

In her application Desiree wrote, “While diversity is a core value for Stevenson, it is equally important in the healthcare field. As a nursing major, I will work towards my goal of becoming culturally aware and diverse in thought so I can provide the best care to my patients. Knowing how to interact with individuals from different backgrounds can prove to be useful in the medical field.”

The Judith Waranch Scholarship for International Study was established in 2016 by Ms.Waranch to encourage Stevenson students to participate in a study abroad program. The Scholarship is open to female students with financial need. Ms. Waranch, a member of the 麻豆视频免费在线观看 Board of Trustees, has more than 35 years of experience as a senior executive and business lawyer. She has traveled extensively and understands the value of experiencing different cultures. It is Ms. Waranch鈥檚 desire to encourage young women to expand their experiences and to develop a world perspective. She values classroom instruction combined with experiential education as a foundation to allow individuals to lead full, productive and successful lives, which is at the core of Stevenson鈥檚 mission.

Stevenson Breaking Ground on New Library and Theater on the Owings Mills Campus

This fall, Stevenson will break ground and begin site development on a new Library and Theater complex on the Owings Mills campus. The 55,000-square-foot facility will be located at Owings Mills North, complementing the university鈥檚 200,000-square-foot Manning Academic Center and School of Design also located there.

In addition to a library, the complex will include a black box theater accompanied by additional spaces for rehearsals, a green room, and costume and scene shops; a faculty commons with offices; and a variety of gathering spaces for academic, social, and cultural functions. This building will enhance Stevenson鈥檚 student experience on the Owings Mills campus by expanding study and social spaces as well as foster collaborations between academic departments.

Faculty Member Celebrates Portraiture Through “Reflections: A Brief History of Looking at Ourselves”

In celebration of the 180th anniversary of photography as an invention, Elena Volkova, Assistant Professor of Photography in Stevenson鈥檚 School of Design, along with Joe Tropea, Maryland Historical Society (MdHS) Curator of Films and Photographs, curated Reflections: A Brief History of Looking at Ourselves, an exhibition of portraiture that celebrates photography as an expression of identity, place, and sense of belonging.

鈥淭he idea behind this project is to invite the public to slow down and engage with photography in a meaningful way,” says Volkova. 鈥淲e hope that people will appreciate how the themes of photography that exist today have history and progression.”

On view, June 19, 2019鈥揓uly 1, 2020, Reflections encompasses nearly the entire era of photography, from the earliest 1840s daguerreotypes to modern day digital photographs and Instagram 鈥渟elfies.” The exhibition opens with a free reception on Wednesday, June 19 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at the Maryland Historical Society, 201 W. Stevenson Receives Tick Research Grant

Researchers at 麻豆视频免费在线观看 and have been awarded a $47,750 grant from the Lyme Disease Research Foundation to collect and study ticks from parks throughout Maryland this summer and fall to learn if they harbor the Lyme bacteria (Borrelia burgdorferi), as well as other important pathogens.

Dr. Tucker explained, 鈥淚t is important to learn about the distribution and variety of pathogens being carried by the ticks, as well as to monitor this over time. Researchers are also only just beginning to understand the interaction effects among the tick microbiome. We also hope to shed some light on this with our research.”

This project also represents a significant training opportunity for undergraduate researchers at 麻豆视频免费在线观看. Undergraduate research is considered to be a high-impact educational practice and an important way that college educators can provide exceptional learning experiences. Scientists at 麻豆视频免费在线观看 always involve their students in their research. Dr. Tucker and her collaborator, Dr. Matthew Tucker, have worked with students on a pilot study over the past three years to examine the tick-borne pathogens present in Maryland white-tailed deer.

Stevenson research student Allison Bishop 鈥19 reflected, 鈥淚 have been able to learn valuable field and laboratory research skills. Additionally, I was able to proudly present my contribution to this study at the 2019 Tick Summit and meet top researchers in the field.”

The new funding will greatly expand on this research, including providing training opportunities this summer through the competitive Summer Science Scholars鈥 Research Program (S3RP).

S3RP student Heather Bowie, stated 鈥淚 am extremely excited to be a part of this summer鈥檚 tick research. I look forward to using my environmental science background and also learning new molecular biology techniques while gaining an understanding of tick-borne illnesses and their prevalence in Maryland.”

May is Lyme Disease Awareness Month. To honor those in the community who have suffered from this disease, individuals should . Prevention of tick bites is the best strategy to beat Lyme disease. While in the great outdoors this summer, individuals should use tick repellent, wear protective clothing, and check themselves for ticks. Blacklegged ticks, the ticks that carry the Lyme disease bacteria, are very small especially in their nymph stage. Adults are about the size of a sesame seed and the nymphs are smaller than a poppy seed. , it should be removed immediately and the wound should be washed to reduce the risk of transmission. Symptoms should be monitored for the next two weeks and individuals should consult with their healthcare provider about sending the tick for testing and next steps.
